The first American spaceplane program began around 1958 and by 1963 pilot Joseph Walker was able to fly an X-15 spaceplane to an altitude of 62 miles becoming an astronaut. He flew an airplane into space!

In 1967 the first in-flight fatality of this new space program occurred in California’s Mojave Desert when USAF pilot, also an astronaut, Major Michael Adams lost control of X-15 #3 and it broke apart spreading debris across miles of the desert.

A memorial was erected at the site where the fuselage came to rest. In our latest Episode we visit this crash site Memorial and look into the “World’s 1st Spaceplane Program”.
